Welcome to my Page

I am Andrea Petrocchi, I currently work at the Max Planck for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) in Hamburg (Germany).

I do a bunch of stuff, at work and at home. I can give myself many titles:

  • Mathematician
  • Computational scientist
  • Research software engineer
  • Software developer

I hold a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in Mathematics, in the area of Optimization and Numerical Analysis. My doctoral studies were about optimization under model order reduction (MOR) and optimal design of input/experiments for dynamical systems. Since 2024 I am working on the MaMMoS project, developing a software for multiscale modelling and calculations of magnetic materials. My daily job is available on GitHub at the MaMMoS project GitHub organization or on my GitHub profile.

However, GitHub bad. For my personal projects I use Codeberg: take a look at my profile andrea-petrocchi.

Interests and Hobbies

  • Open Source Software (OSS) enthusiast. I try to stay away from BigTech as much as possible. I have not used Amazon in years, I have a de-googled phone, I use ProtonMail as e-mail provider, Signal as main messaging platform, Qobuz and physical CDs for my music library, CachyOS and Debian on my computers, and I am on Mastodon.
  • Avid reader, see my Reading list!
  • I enjoy listening to music for relax, inspiration, and escaping. In general I enjoy different types of media: TV series, movies, videogames.
  • I like to learn, and even with a job I spend some of my free time on advanced mathematics books and scientific magazines.
  • I am fascinated with languages. My mother tongue is Italian, with a strong Roman accent. I know and speak English since I was 6 years old (luckily I have improved since then). I am learning German (level B2) and Russian (level B1).
